Kalle Rovanperä Racing, the flying Finn’s future with TGS Team
Special Interview
From Finland, Kalle Rovanperä, 15, son of Harri, the wonder child and Scandinavian Rally’s present top promise, will debut next year in the National Rally Latvia with a Fabia S2000 car from TGS Team managed by “Flying Finn” Toni Gardemeister. Kalle told us about his feelings, plans and goals.
Kalle, what does your father mean as teacher and experienced rally driver? Your father probably told you about his brilliant performances and experiences at Peugeot and Mitsubishi WRC, is it a great input for your professional and sporting growth in motorsport?
Yep, my father got me into motorsport and told great stories about it, but in rallying he never taught me, I have learned everything by myself.
What were your first memories inside a rally car and at what age that happened?
I was 8 years old it was totally fun, and I really wanted to drive again right away.
What kind of experience has been achieved in the local tournament Rally Latvia?
Latvia has been a great experience for me and will be in future as well.
Kalle, in 2015 you won the simple-drive class in Latvia driving a Citroën C2 with Risto Pietiläinen as co-driver. What can you tell us about that?
Risto is very important on our races and I could not hope anybody else by my side. Risto is great co-driver and has a lot of experience so it’s great to drive with him! And, sorry I will correct that in Finland and Poland only test and in Latvia races.
You had the opportunity to test for the first time on gravel in Finland and on asphalt in Poland the ŠKODA Fabia Super 2000 from Toni Gardemeister’s TGS Team, what feelings did you get from these initial tests in a four-wheel drive car?
Yes, I have driven s2000 in Finland and Poland and it has been great training and experience.
Can you tell us a brief thought about Toni Gardemeister, as driver and team manager for TGS Team?
Toni’s team is a great team and I enjoy driving there and Toni is also a good guy.
Kalle, the big news for next year is your confirmation and entry in the senior class of Rally Latvia championship with a ŠKODA Fabia Super 2000 car from TGS Team. Is it a great opportunity to gain experience being a young boy of only 15 years?
Yep, next year we will drive some races on s2000 hopefully and maybe more, but that is great at this point so I can learn in peace and on my own speed.
How many rounds has the annual championship Rally Latvia and what features have the paths to compete in each event?
It has several competitions a year and its route is varied between gravel, ice, asphalt and snow.
Will this important project with the ŠKODA S200 have Risto Pietiläinen co-driving support and advice from your father Harri and Toni’s?
Now I have a good team (father, TGS) and Risto, so that’s great and I have a really good place to train and race.
Kalle, would you love to test in any time within next year the new ŠKODA Fabia R5 that soon will arrive the TGS Team squad?
I would love to test r5 next year with TGS so let’s hope the best.
What’s your favorite rally car and which WRC driver impress you more with his driving?
I don’t have any favorite driver nor car.
Kalle, where do you like to drive more: over ice, snow or gravel, dirt or asphalt?
Gravel and snow are funny surfaces, but I like to train more on asphalt because it’s tricky and important.
Is your dream to be able to race in WRC in the coming years and become World Rally Champion?
Yep, I would like to drive rally car for my job and also win championships.
