WORLD CHAMPIONS TAKE WHATSAPP – VOLKSWAGEN LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE INFORMATION SERVICE FOR THE WRC
WRC A FULL 2016
World champions take to WhatsApp – Volkswagen launches innovative information service for the WRC.
New service for journalists: Information, photo, video and audio files straight to your smartphone
Volkswagen the first manufacturer in motorsport to offer professional “broadcasts”
FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP (WRC)
30 June 2016
Wolfsburg (29 June 2016). Volkswagen moves up a gear on the social web: three-time world rally champions Volkswagen will now be in direct contact with journalists via the message and chat services WhatsApp, Insta and Telegram. Innovative push notification services ensure that journalists are always up to speed during rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The WhatsApp chat network passed the billion user mark at the start of 2016, with more than 40 billion messages sent via WhatsApp every day.
Journalists can now register for information services via WhatsApp, Insta and Telegram. This is possible via the Volkswagen Motorsport website (www.volkswagen-motorsport.com), which has been optimised for smartphones, thanks to the automatic modification of all common end devices. A suitable control element guides users through the simple two-factor authentication. The receipt of notifications can be controlled directly from the WhatsApp smartphone apps by sending the keywords “Start” and “Stop”. Users remain anonymous at all time in the broadcast lists, but can still chat on a one-to-one basis with the Volkswagen Motorsport team.
Choice of density of information – three freely combinable lists available
Journalists can combine three distribution lists as they wish. Volkswagen offers a choice of the lists “Essential”, “Emotional” and “Additional” on WhatsApp, Insta and Telegram. “Essential” provides a short overview of the result and overall standings after each special stage in the World Rally Championship, as well as quotes from works drivers Sébastien Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen as audio files, and interesting statistics. “Emotional” sends photos and videos straight to the smartphone. “Additional” provides information on articles and news worth reading from the world of the WRC. As such, every user can configure their own personal information service – and can modify it at any time.
A tradition of innovation: Volkswagen the technical pioneer
Volkswagen Motorsport is one of the first providers in sport to take advantage of these possibilities, and the first manufacturer involved in motor racing to offer a direct service via WhatsApp, Insta and Telegram. Volkswagen’s Motorsport department enjoys a long tradition of innovation: the car maker was one of the first to offer a dedicated app for smartphones and a website adapted for various end devices (responsive design).
Start? Now.
The Rally Poland, which heralds the high-speed weeks in the World Rally Championship, is the first event, at which Volkswagen will report on the action out on the special stages via WhatsApp, Insta and Telegram. To have notifications sent straight to their smartphone, users should register at volkswagen-motorsport.com/whatsapp.
