Basso – Granai on Skoda take the win at the Rally di Roma Capitale

The great show “Arena ACI Roma” in Ostia completed another record edition of the event organized by Motorsport Italia. The completely Italian podium welcomed the comeback of Campedelli on Ford and Crugnola on Skoda, the latter winning 14 tests. Ovation for the patron Maurizio Battista with Enrico Silvestrin.

Rome, July 21st, 2019. The 7th Rally di Roma Capitale awarded strong emotions until the final meters of the “Arena ACI Roma”, the final show that ran in front of thousands of spectators in Ostia that cheered an all-Italian podium at the 5th round of the European Rally Championship and Italian Rally Championship. Giandomenico Basso and Lorenzo Granai took the win on Skoda Fabia R5. The crew of Metior Sport got the lead halfway through leg one thanks to the win in SS4. Since then they defended with skills and experience the lead from the attacks of their rivals. The second position eventually went to Simone Campedelli and Tania Canton that after a troubled start saw their efforts as well as the work of Team Orange One on the Ford Fiesta R5 delivered by M-sport in its latest updates only at the eve of the race rewarded also by the win of SS7. Andrea Crugnola and Pietro Elia Ometto managed to get on the podium thanks to a gritty performance on the Skoda Fabia R5. The Gass Racing crew dominated the rally winning 13 of the 16 tests but slipped down to the back due to a puncture in leg one and with a great resolution they started a furious comeback run completing it with the decisive attack in the closing stages when the two recovered the final seconds. Thanks to the double win on the “Arena ACI Roma” Crugnola won the “Memorial Pasquale Amoroso”, event in the memory of the late ACI Sport Manager. The opening race was won by the Russian Gryazin on Skoda Fabia instead.

The first foreign crew were at the feet of the podium in 4th place. These were the Russians Alexey Lukyanuk and Alexey Arnautov on Citroen C3 R5. They are among the main protagonists in the European Championship but suffered from the not so great feeling with the challenging tests in Lazio and a 1 minute time penalty in the middle of leg 2. The top five was completed by the Czech Filip Mares and Jan Hlousek on Skoda Fabia. The two were hoping for more in this Italian round of the championship. The sixth place went to the young Britons Chris Ingram and Ross Whittock on Skoda Fabia at the end of a strong comeback. They closed their effort as the first in the Junior European classification at the end of a very challenging rally. The seventh place went to the Hungarian Norbert Herczig on Volkswagen Polo GTI, that has been at ease in this rally and led Latvia’s Martins Sesks on Skoda, who was eighth despite a spin in SS12 and found some optimal solutions only in the closing stages. The top ten was rounded off by two Italian crews: Antonio Rusce and Marco Vozzo on Skoda Fabia, that lost some time due to a spin in SS9 and had some grip issues, while Umberto Scandola and Guido D’Amore led the new Hyundai i20 to the tenth place. The car is still being refined by Hyundai Rally Team Italia and the crew had a slip and a puncture in the first leg. The victory in the 2WD and RC4 Junior went to the Estonians Ken Torn and Kaurl Pannas on Ford Fiesta R2.

The 7th Rally di Roma Capitale confirmed once again the record figures and a perfect resonance with the territory housing the rally. Great spectators have cheered the three days organized very effectively by Motorsport Italia led by the tireless Max Rendina, 2014 Production Rally World Champion that devised the rally. A liason of 849,72 Km, 203,40 of which competitive and split in 16 stages was the battleground of this sporting challenge.

The excitement of the 7th Rally di Roma Capitale has been made bigger by the challenge for the 41st Rally di Pico, the competition valid for the Rally Cup of 7th Zone started on Friday evening in Pico’s town centre in the presence of the representatives of the Municipality and the Major Ornella Carnevale. The victory went to Gianni Gravante and Gino Abatecola on Ford Fiesta R5.
