SUBARU BRZ GT300 finishes 6th after red flag interruption
The final race of the 2022 SUPER GT Series Round 3 “SUZUKA GT 450km RACE” was held on June 4th (Sun) at Suzuka Circuit in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture, attracting 33,000 spectators.
Super GT Round 3 requires two pit stops and refueling at a distance of 450km. As a result, each team has a different strategy, which is also strategically worth watching. The SUBARU BRZ GT300 started from pole position.
The team’s strategy was to start with Hideki Yamauchi, and have a double stint strategy that does not change drivers during the first pit stop. Then, at the second pit stop, he took the place of Takuto Iguchi with a strategy of running away.
From the start, Yamauchi showed a run that pulled away from the following as expected. On the 6th lap, he had an 8.024 second lead over 2nd place, but due to an accident with another machine, it became FCY (Full Course Yellow), and at that point he had a lead of 26.244 seconds. However, it changed from FCY to SC (safety car) and lost the lead.
Stop on the straight, line up and restart the race. Yamauchi showed good running even after the restart and took the lead again. After only 8 laps from the restart of the race, it was a fast run with a difference of 7.311 seconds from 2nd place.
At the first pit stop, the car restarted after refueling and two tires were changed, but the position dropped to 13th place, but when Iguchi handed over the car, it recovered to 3rd place.
When Iguchi returned to the course, he was 11th. Iguchi also gradually regained his position, and by the 47th lap he was back up to 6th. We were running at a faster pace than the top three cars, so we could expect to catch up with the leaders towards the end of the race.
However, a crash involving multiple machines occurred, causing the race to be red-flagged and the race to end.
Hideki Yamauchi
“We didn’t win the race, but I’m glad we got some points. Last year at Suzuka, we struggled a lot because we couldn’t score any points. There were some regrets, but the machine has speed, and we want to do our best again from here.”
Takuto Iguchi
“I wonder how things would have turned out if we had been able to finish the race, but last year we struggled, so I am glad that we were able to bring it to a good start. I want to prepare myself to win the championship.”
Director Ozawa
“I am fully aware of the risk of the safety car, but the timing was bad. However, the team who thought that the 450km was half the distance was dropping in time, so we were able to catch up with the leaders until the end. I don’t think it was a bad strategy. The next race, Fuji Speedway, is a circuit that I’ve been good at, so I’d like to take the golden pattern of running away from pole position and winning.”
Round 4 will be held on August 5th (Sat) and 6th (Sun) at Fuji Speedway in Oyama Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. Please support the BRZ GT300, which has regained its speed.
