Up-and-coming Italian rally star Mattia Vita has embarked on the latest leg of his journey to the World Rally Championship after being selected to join his country’s national rally team.

Vita, who finished joint fourth on the European Rally Championship’s Junior U27 class in his first full season last year, was revealed as a driver for ACI Team Italia in Rome on Wednesday night night, backed by the Italian motoring federation. This is the same organisation that has supported Fabio Andolfi on the world stage in recent years, the winner of WRC2 in Corsica last year. Ekosystem, another of Mattia’s backers, was also present at the launch.

Mattia’s association with ACI Team Italia is another step closer to his ambition of competing full-time on the World Rally Championship, having previously starred in karting and circuit racing alongside drivers such as Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. With a family background in rallying, the 22-year-old’s career has now taken a different direction – and he is determined to make it to the top of the sport.

At the evening in Rome, his programme was also announced. Mattia will be competing on the Italian Junior Rally Championship, which uses identical Ford Fiesta R2T cars in order to put the emphasis on driving talent. The top prize of the championship helps to fund a drive on the 2020 Junior World Rally Championship: a feeder series to the main WRC, which counts Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier among its graduates.

The programme takes in all the rounds of the Italian Junior championship, starting with the legendary Sanremo Rally from April 12-14. On top of the Italian series, Mattia will also be contesting a few extra events – including some outings on the World Rally Championship. Mattia will be co-driven this year by 46-year-old Italian Massimiliano Bosi.

Mattia said: “I’m fully focussed on my goal to reach the World Rally Championship and I’m very excited by the opportunities and experience that my season ahead of me will bring. Although Italy is my home country, I have always competed abroad, so most of the events will be completely new to me. I’m looking forward to driving the Ford Fiesta R2T, which will be useful experience as I aim to graduate to the Junior World Championship. Already we’re going to be doing a few WRC events this year, so we’re going to be adding to our knowledge all the time. It’s a big honour to be selected as part of ACI Team Italia, and I’m very grateful for this recognition.”

Away from the stages, Mattia leads a busy lifestyle: he’s involved in sponsorship of MotoGP, as well as running bespoke experience companies in Italy and the UK, specialising in Italian catering. On top of that, he is studying International Relations and Political Science at the University of Pisa and is a factory driver for the PCR karting squad. This year, he will combine his rally commitments with a karting programme that takes him as far as Australia, on top of the world championships in Italy.
