Oliver: “I love winter rallies and this one can be really special.”
After dominant performances at Rallye Monte-Carlo and the Race of Champions, Oliver Solberg turns his attentions to WRC2 at this week’s Rally Sweden.
The Swede will drive a Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 on an Umeå-based event which marks the first round of his 2023 WRC2 campaign.
Oliver used Monte Carlo as a way to familiarise himself with the Toksport-run Fabia he will drive this season – a process he undertook with both pace and precision, winning 10 from 18 stages in the Rally2 category.
“It’s been a really cool few weeks,” said Oliver. “Monte was a great way to get to know the new car and to win a few stages was a nice boost to the confidence.
“After that, my Dad and me won Nations Cup for the second year running in Race of Champions. I loved that whole weekend. We were having a really good run, we were unbeaten against so many big names like [Sébastien] Loeb, [Thierry] Neuville and Johan [Kristoffersson] but then I made a tiny mistake and ran a little bit wide and an advertising banner got caught around the wheel.
“So now, it’s Sweden and my home race, It’s special. We drove for two days in the north, working with the team to find a good set-up for this week. It was really, really cool – like minus 24 on the first day!
“On Sunday it was much warmer… it was only minus 12 Celsius! We had some really good ice on the roads. We’ve had two great test days with several roads to choose between to help us get the cars set up for the mission ahead.”
Oliver starred in the early stages of his home round of the world championship, running in the top-three overall in Umeå last year – he’s looking for more of that speed this week.
“It’s my home event,” he said. “You want to go well on every event, but there’s always a little bit more incentive when you’re at home and you can see the flags and everybody waving. I love the winter rallies and this one can be a really special one. We know there’s a lot of really tough competition with some big names and fast drivers in WRC2. All we can do is our best and I’m looking forward to doing that.”
Oliver and co-driver Elliott Edmondson start their Swedish adventure with the crowd-pleasing 5.16km Umeå Sprint stage on Thursday evening.
The route for the following three days is 62% different from last season and delivers 301.18 kilometres in 18 stages.
