FIA ERC1 Junior Championship: Round 5 of 6

Having finished second in class on his R5 debut on Rally Liepāja in late May, Latvian teenager Mārtiņš Sesks again made the most of his prize drive opportunity from FIA European Rally Championship promoter Eurosport Events for winning the Pirelli-supported ERC3 Junior title in 2018. This time he finished third in ERC1 Junior, his first event in an R5 car on Tarmac.

“We were quite steady at the start for our first time on Tarmac in an R5 car but three kilometres before the end of the first stage we got a puncture in the front right and we lost quite much time. The second stage was to get things done right with no mistakes because we had no spares left, so we needed to go through two stages without mistakes. I am glad we did it but for sure it’s all the time learning, it’s unbelievable sometimes. It’s much, much harder on Tarmac in an R5 car, much harder to understand because the speed in the corners is twice as fast as it is on gravel. You need to trust the car and that’s not easy for the first time, especially on a Tarmac rally here in Rome when you have bumps, you’re cutting corners on very fast bumpy roads. It was interesting, good for the learning and we got through the first day, which was really cool in this rally. We had a small problem with the intercom, but I heard every note in my pacenotes. I’m quite happy to be at the finish because we found a lot of new things, how to drive the car and for sure it’s only our second rally in an R5. Everything is new but everything was right. For sure I want to do more of this and for sure I want to do a World Rally Car soon, but that’s the next step. The prize I had from Eurosport Events was unbelievable, the experience I now have in an R5 car.”😀
