Jari Ketomaa scores another top result for R5 Mitsubishi.

This weekend’s Vaakuna Rally saw Jari Ketomma provide the R5 specification Mitsubishi Mirage with another top result, the three-times Finnish Rally Champion bringing the car home in fourth place overall. Following the event he praised the car’s impressive handling over the rally’s eight winter stages.
Based in Mikkeli, Southeast Finland, the event represented round two of the country’s national championship and attracted some of the region’s best drivers. With Ketomaa and his co-driver Marko Salinen seeded at number one and, with the rally seeing the Swedish-built Mitsubishi compete in Finland for the first time, there was a great deal of attention surrounding the car on the lead-up to the event.
The rally began on Friday evening with two special stages before the overnight halt. A solid start resulted in Ketomaa completing the evening’s competition in seventh place, although a software issue caused a frustrating drop in power.
Albeit just 25-seconds off the leader and, with the Mpart team – the company responsible for the creation of the R5 specification Mitsubishi – returning the engine’s output back to normal for Saturday’s six stages, Ketomaa set about making up the deficit. After recording one second, two third and three fourth-fastest stage times, the Finnish pairing fought back during the day to claim an impressive fourth place overall.
After the rally Ketomaa said: “The Mitsubishi has ran really well. It’s handling is fantastic – in fact I’ve not competed in anything that’s so much fun to drive in years. If it hadn’t been for the software issue on Friday evening, then I know we would have been battling for a podium position – if not for the lead.
“I have to thank Tomas Weng and his team at Mpart for all their hard work and support. It was a great all-round effort. I enjoyed the rally and I really look forward to driving the Mitsubishi again.”
The car used by Ketomaa will now return to Sweden for a thorough check before being transported to the UK for the first round of the MSA British Rally Championship – the forthcoming weekend’s Mid Wales Stages – when Welshman Osian Pryce will drive the car.
